Effect of pretreatment by ferrate potassium on activated sludge dewaterability

Abstract
Different dosages of ferrate potassium were added to the activated sludge to investigate the effects of ferrate potassium on sludge flocs characteristics and the dewatering indexes. Sludge flocs characteristics in- cluded particle sizes and the content of EPS. Dewatering indexes included sludge filtration (CST) and dewate- ring extent (solid extent of centrifugation). The results show that pretreatment by ferrate potassium can change the structure of the sludge flocs and improve sludge dewatering extent. But it also increases the content of EPS, which affects adversely the dewaterability of the sludge. Fe (OH) 3 derived from the decomposition ferrate potassi- um can result in more flocculation of flocs and improve sludge settleabilitv.关键词
