A Research on the Ecological Implication of Hardy's The Return of the Native
摘要
Abstract
Thomas Hardy, is an English novelist with a deep ecological thought mainly reflected in his famous novel The Return of the Native. The depiction of Egdon Heath embodies Hardy's integrally-ecological view: natural surroundings are not pure settings for human activities but with active life patterns and independent living meanings. People are not the center of the world any more but just one element of the whole ecological system. People and natural surroundings keep an inten'elated and interdependent relationship. It is then devoted to an ecocritical interpretation of Hardy's depiction of the im- age of plants and animals on Egdon Heath which displays his ecological longing for a harmonious relation between people and nature and his concern and sympathy towards other non-human beings, while Hardy's main characters' three different relations with nature further embodies the novel's ecological thought: only when people keep a close and harmonious relation with nature, can they enjoy the happy life.关键词
