Abstract

Objective; To study the distribution and morphology of neurons containing monocarboxylate transporter 2 (MCTZ) in the brain of rats. Methods; Nissl's staining, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence technique were used. Results; MCT2 immunoreactivity was observed in the olfactory bulb, telencephalon, diencephalon, cerebellum and brain stem. It was mainly located in the somas and processes of the neurons. The MCT2-possitive neurons were widely and uniformly distributed in the olfactory bulb, telencephalon and diencephalon. In the brain stem, MCT2 was distributed in the visceral motor nuclei and somatic sensory nuclei except general visceral motor and sensory nuclei. In addition, MCT2 expressed in the nuclei of non-cranial nerves, such as nucleus ceruleus, inferior olive nucleus, raphe nucleus, gigantocellular reticular nucleus, intermediate reticular nucleus and lateral reticular nucleus. Besides, MCT2 immunopositive neurons were observed in the lateral cerebellar nucleus, interposed cerebellar nucleus and medial cerebellum nucleus. MCT2 immunopositive neurons had different forms in different regions. Conclusion; MCT2 was distributed in the regions, cerebral cortex, hippocampus, hypothalamus, reticular formation and nuclei of cranial nerves, associated with some vital cerebral functions, indicating that MCT2 has some special important roles in maintaining some of essential life activities under physiological conditions.
