Abstract
Purpose To study clinicopathological features and differential diagnosis of carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation ( CASTLE ). Methods Six cases of CASTLE were studied by light microscopy, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Results Microscopically, the tumor cells arranged in nests with various degree of lymphocytic infiltration. The tumor cells were polygonal to spindle in shape with oval vesicular nucleus and small distinct nucleoli, but mitoses were rare. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells characteristically stained positive for CD5 and CD117. Ultrastmcturally, the tumor cells contained many mitochondria and tonofi-brils in the cytoplasm, and desmosomes were easily found between the tumor cells. Conclusions The diagnosis of CASTLE depends on morphology and immunohistochemical examination. Ultrastructural features are helpful for the differential diagnosis of CASTLE from other tumors of the thyroid.关键词
