Investigation of applicability of bed load transport functions in terms of river equilibrium theory

Abstract
Bed load transport functions widely used in alluvial rivers are usually founded based on experimental evidences, when they are used in natural rivers, the prediction of the channel geometry is often far from the observed results. The function itself has a big influence on the river channel geometry. Considering the common form of the functionΦ=Cb ( t0* - Tc *) β, where Φ and T0* are the normalized dimensionless bed load flux and flow strength, cb is a coefficient, r' is the critical shear stress for the incipient movement of bed material and β is an exponent, respectively, the effect of the bed load transport function on the river channel geometry is discussed. By introducing the width/depth ratio as a description of the channel geometry into the basic flow relationships of continuity, resistance and bed load transport, the equilibrium condition of alluvial rivers is inherently to obtain a closure solution. This study analyzes the relationship of width/depth ratio under different β conditions, and it finds that the exponent β is the key factor in the function which influences the river channel geometry most. Based on the channel geometry data observed in Jianli reach of the Middle Yangtze River, it suggests whenβ =5/3 , the bed load transport function shows a good practical application in the river equilibrium theory.关键词
