ELECTRIC ACUPUNCTURE COMBINED WITH ACUPOINT APPLICATION OF THE CHINESE TRADITIONAL MEDICINE IN TREATING PERIPHERAL FACIAL PARALYSIS

Abstract
Objective To assess the efficacy of electric acupuncture combined with acupoint application of traditional Chinese medicine for peripheral facial paralysis (PFP). Methods Sixty PFP patients were equally randomized to treatment group and control group, who were treated either with the combined therapy or electric acupuncture alone. The therapeutic effect, improvement rate, recovery time, and complications were compared between the two groups. Results The efficacy, improvement, and duration of recovery were not significantly different between the two groups, but the difference was significant in terms of their complications (P=0.026). Conclusion Compared with acupuncture alone, though the combined therapy for peripheral facial paralysis docs not improve the curative effect and decrease the course of treatment, it lowers the incidence of complications.关键词
