Effects of Alumina on Synthesis of Forsterite from Low-grade Magnesite and Natural Silica

Abstract
Forsterite material was synthesized using active magnesia prepared from low-grade magnesite and natural silica as raw materials, alumina as additive. The phases composition and microstructure of sintered samples were characterize by XRD and SEM. The cell parameters and volume of the forsterite phase were estimated by X'Pert plus software. The effect of alumina on composition, cell parameters, microstructure and properties of forsterite material at normal temperature was studied. In combination with the structure and properties of analysis results, the enstatite emerges in the forsterite prepared through reaction sintering at 1500 ℃ from active magnesia and the natural silica, is attributed to A12O3 as additive. The additive alumina results to the increasement of cell parameters and volume of the forsterite. The sintering of forsterite is promoted by alumina, the relative density and cold crush strength are increased with increasing alumina.关键词
