Abstract

Although limit equilibrium method has been widely used in stability analysis due to its simplicity, it has shortcomings in dealing with three-dimensional problems, while finite element strength reduction is a more practical technique. In this paper, a strength reduction technique and pseudo-static method based on FLAC3D are applied to dynamic stability analysis of rockfill dams under earthquake conditions to study the effects of dam height, dam slope, earthquake intensity and bank slope on the safety factor and the critical slip surface's location and shape for two types of rockfill dams, concrete-face rockfill dam and earth-core rockfill dam. To reduce computational cost of stability estimation, two fitting functions are proposed for the two dam types, respectively. The analysis reveals that in the concrete-face case, earthquake intensity and bank slope have significant effects, while in the earth-core case, earthquake intensity has little effect.
