Adsorption of Phenol onto Mesoporous SBA-15 Molecular Sieves

Abstract
In order to remove phenol from waste water, the adsorption of phenol on mesoporous SBA-15 was studied by thermodynamic and kinetic methods, and was compared to self-made activated carbon(AC). The SBA-15 and AC were characterized by means of XRD and N2 adsorption-desorption. Compared to AC, the specific surface area of SBA-15 is small, but it has a lot of mesopores which leads to shorter adsorption equilibrium time and larger saturated adsorption capacity. Freundlich and Langmuir isothermal adsorption equations were used to describe the adsorption, and it was showed that the Langmuir model fitted the experimental data better. The adsorption kinetics was investigated with pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, and the adsorption rate constants were calculated. It was found that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model could provide better correlation with the experimental data. The calculated results for the thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption process was exothermic, spontaneous and physical adsorption.关键词
