Abstract

In hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalale (DM0) to ethylene glycol (EG) over Cu/SiO,, catalyst deactivation was observed. The fresh and deactivated catalyst samples were characterized by Nrphysisorption, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence, and it was concluded that catalyst deactivation was due to sulfur poisoning. Cu/SiO2 catalysts employed in hydrogenation of DM0 to EG were very sensitive to sulfur, and sulfur tolerances of them were lower than methanol synthesis catalysts (Cu/Zn/Al2O3). Sulfur poisoning was rapid, and trace amounts of sulfur in feedstock could reduce EG yield to only 5.67% in 90 hours.
