Abstract

Calculating the fractal dimensions based on the weight of particle size distribution, fractal dimen- sion of soil particle, soil water-stable aggregates and micro-aggregates during the vegetation restoration process in Karst region were studied and the relationship between soil physical and chemical properties and fractal dimension was analyzed. The results showed that the content of soil water-stable aggregates(~0. 25 mm) increased and soil structure improved during the vegetation restoration; the fractal dimension of particle size distribution were dramatically positive correlated with available N(P~0.05), and little correlated with other factors; the fractal dimension of soil micro-aggregates and soil water-stable aggregates were negatively correlated with organic matter, total N and available N, dramatically positive correlated with soil structural destruction ratio. The results indicated the fractal dimension of soil miero-aggregates and soil water-stable aggregates could reflect the characteristics of soil physical and chemical properties and be used as a quantita- tive index for the assessment of soil structure during the vegetation recovery. Slope farmland had worst soil structure, and returning farmland to forest could be beneficial to soil and conservation in Karst region.
