The Effects of Supplementing Lavender Essential Oil on Concentrations of Indole and Skatole in Sheep Rumen Fluid

Abstract

[Objective]The research aimed to study the effects of different levels of lavender essential oil on the contents of indole and skatole of rumen fluid in sheep. [ Method] In this experiment, five Kazak rams which were 1.5 -year -old, 35 kilos heavy with a permanent rumen fistula were tried. At first, controlled trials were conducted on each sheep, and then 0.5 and 1.00 mL lavender essential oil was added to the test respectively, namely, lavender essential oil was added two times every morning and evening in the mixed concentrate feed. [ Result] When the 0. 5 and 1. 00 mL lavender essential oil were added in diets, the concentrations of indole at each time point of rumen fluid in sheep were decreased (P <0.05), and at the time when 0.5 mL lavender essential oil was added in diets, the concentrations of skatole average of at each time point of rumen fluid in sheep was decreased by 16.74% (P < 0.05 ) , while 1.00 mL lavender essential oil was added in diets, it was increased by 6.74%. It is inferred that the different levels of lavender essential oil to the concentrations of skatole of rumen fluid in sheep was different. [ Conclusion] The results showed that the diets were supplemented with 0. 5 mL lavender essential oil can significantly decrease the concentrations of indole and skatole of rumen fluid.
