Reliability and validity of the Chinese vision of Inventory of Father Involvement

Abstract
Objective: To examine the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of Inventory of Father Involvement (IR). Methods: Authorized by the original author, the English version of the IFI was translated into Chinese, including 26 items. By convenience sampling method, 871 children's fathers were selected and assessed with the IFI for item analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and internal consistency analysis. The Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Olson Enrich Marital Inventory (ENRICH) were administered to test the criterion-related validity. Thirty fathers finished the IFI again 4 weeks later to assess the test-retest reliability. Results: The exploratory factor analysis extracted 4 components, and explained 64.5% of the total variance. The confirmatory factor analysis verified the 4-factor model x2/df = 2.99, GFI =0.87, IFI =0.92, NNFI = 0.91, CFI =0.92, RMSEA =0.07). Concurrent validity results showed that father's total scores and sub-scores of IFI were negatively correlated with total scores of SDS (r = -0.22 - -0.34, P < 0.01) and SAS (r = - 0.17 - - 0.28, P < 0.01), and positively correlated with father's total scores of ENRICH (r = 0. 35 - 0.47, P < 0.01). The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the 4 factors was 0.74 - 0.91, and the test-retest reliability coefficient of the 4 factors of IFI was 0.70 -0.82. Conclusion: It suggests that the Chinese version of IFI is a reliable and valid assessment of father involvement, and may be used to assess the involvement of Chinese fathers.关键词
