Abstract
Although natural matter has seldom been the focus of Western Aesthetics, scattered views relating to nature can be located. This paper conducts a brief exploration on the image of water in Western Aesthetics and groups them into four approaches. Firstly, Thales views water as the origin of the world; Secondly, Neo-Platonists regards water as a medium in aesthetics; Thirdly, Romantics use water as a metaphor to describe the flow of inspiration or the reflection of mind in their organic aesthetics; Lastly, Bachelard and Foucault consider water as a symbol of irrationality. The four views "origin梡ragmatic梕xpressive梌anti-rational" has a diachronic order.关键词
