Abstract

The meshless method of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) was used to simulate impulsive wave generated by a rectangular block falling inside water. The velocity and height change of free surface were contrasted with the analytical solution and VOF turbulent flow model results. The free surface transition was calculated at slide falling speed of 0.2, 0,6 and 1.0 m/s, respectively. The results show lhat sliding block results in free surface transformation, scroll, wave generation and mixture of liquid with air. The solitary wave profile and horizontal velocity agree well with the analytical solution and VOF results. The wave profile is flat with no scroll waves at slowly sliding speed; the water is separate from the air at high speed. The peak wave crest increases with the increase of the sliding speed. The SPH model can serve as useful model of Large-scale rock avalanches from steep cliffs near substantial bodies of water, or of complex tsunami prediction.
