Abstract

Ethanol was often used as a solvent in the preparation of chitosan materials.On the basis of our previous work,the effects of ethanol on the morphology and mechanical properties of chitosan-based porous scaffolds were studied.Compared with untreated normal scaffolds,the ethanol treated porous chitosan scaffolds had fully developed three-dimensional ordered structure,and their pore size distribution was relatively uniform.Through the mercury porosimetry,it was suggested that the pore size of the untreated chitosan scaffold,on average,was 143μm,and changed within 60~200μm;while those of the ethanol treated chitosan scaffolds were 46μm and within 10~100μm,respectively.Their mechanical properties were also significantly improved by the ethanol treatment.XRD further revealed that the ethanol treatment led to the shortening of the chitosan chains in a poor solvent and to the shrinkage of the cell of chitosan crystal,all of which enhanced the mechanical property of the chitosan scaffolds.
