Iron Absorption and Its Regulation in the Neonate
摘要
Abstract
Maintaining iron homeostasis is important for mammal health, particularly in the rapidly growing period following birth. Iron deficiency not only decreases growth performance but also results in irreversible damage to central nervous system. However, the overload of iron during this period can also be detrimental, possibly due to excessive free radical production. However, neonates are unable to be down regulated in response to excess iron as it can be fine balanced in adults. So it is prudent to supplement neonates with iron as the immature regulation of iron absorption during early infancy. This article provides a succinct overview of current understanding of intestinal iron absorption and its regulation in the neonate.关键词
