Abstract

A12O3-ZrO2 composite powders (A12O3 content of 51.74% in mass, ZrO2 content of 44.95% in mass) were synthesized by a sol-gel process using A1C13·6H2O and ZrOC12·8H2O as starting materials, and NH3.H2O as a precipitant. Chemical composition, mineral phase and particle size distribution of the composite powders were investigated by X-ray fluorescence instrument, X-ray diffractometer, thermogravimetric analyzer, laser particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the chemical composition of the alumina-zirconia composite powders synthesized by the sol-gel process were homogeneous and the particle size was fine (〈 0.5 μm about 5%, 0.5-5.0 μm about 55%, 〉 5.0 μm about 40%). The crystallization could be improved when the heat treatment temperature was increased. The main crystalline phase was t-ZrO2 at heat treatment temperature of 800 ℃ and that were lots of t-ZrO2, little corundum and trace c-ZrO2 at 1 2O0 ℃. The corundum and c-ZrO2 increased when heat treatment temperature was higher than 1 350 ℃.
