Abstract

Some sea mud can be filled in aerobic reactor with natural seawater and nutrients to become activated sludge.It performs good activity in treating saline wastewater and it was named marine activated sludge.After a ten-weeks long cultivation,the sludge volume index(SVI) increased from 19 mL/g to 70 mL/g,while CODMn degradation rate peaks 90% and degradation rate of ammonia nitrogen reached 45% after 12-hour reaction.Furthermore,feeding sludge once a day has the highest biodegrability.And dextrose is better than starch as a carbon source for cultivation.Also,marine activated sludge has a stronger biodegrability in treating saline wastewater and a better stability against salinity shift than the conventional activated sludge.The CODMn degradation rate is over 70% and degradation rate of ammonia nitrogen is over 30% after 12-hour reaction in the case that the salinity is under 6%,both of which present applied values of saline wastewater treatment.However,an obvious biological activity inhibition is observed in the case that the salinity rate is above 6%.The marine activated sludge has a higher resistance to salinity variation.Even in low salinity,the marine activated sludge's stability of the degradation rate of ammonia nitrogen overmatches conventional activated sludge.
