Abstract

Addition of an adjuvant to inactivated influenza vaccines can improve the immune responses and save antigen dosage. Some polysaccharides derived from Chinese medicinal herbs have potential adjuvant effect. In this paper, the adjuvant effect of ginseng polysaccharide (GPS) was explored on inactivated new influenza A virus (H1N1) vaccine. Mice were immunized once with the split vaccine adjuvanted with various dosages of GPS. The serum antibody responses in mice after the vaccination were analyzed by ELISA to evaluate the adjuvant effect of GPS. The immune responses were also compared with those induced by vaccine alone or adjuvanted with alum. The result showed that GPS had the same effect as alum on enhancing the specific IgM and IgG antibody levels induced by the vaccine. The optimum dosage of GPS was 800 μg in immunization. GPS may be an adjuvant candidate for inactivated influenza vaccines.
