Abstract

Inlet closure is one of the layouts of the Yangshan Harbor Project, the fundamental engineering for port building, and its completion is a primary contribution to hydrodynamic and sea bed accretion/erosion change. So far, the inlets between Kezhushan Island and Xiaoyangshan Island in north, between Shuanglians-han Island and Dashantang Island and between Dashantang Island and Dayangshan Island in south remain open. Whether closing these inlets has ever been a hot issue. The paper analyses the yearly variation of water and suspended sediment transport based on flux analysis. The result shows that it is essential to remain the inlet between Kezhushan Island and Xiaoyangshan Island open because the net suspended sediment transport out of the harbor per unit width in normal direction increases with year.
