Influence of the triplet state levels on the luminescent properties of the terbium( Ⅲ ) and europium( Ⅲ ) complexes of pyridine nitrogen oxides

Abstract

The emission parameters for Tb3+and Eu3 + complexes with 6-methyl-2-pyridine N-oxide(L1), N,N'-BIS(6-metyl-2-pyridinecarboxylamide-N-Oxide)-l,2-ethane(L2) ,N,N'-BIS(6-metyl-2-pyridinecar-boxylamide-N-Oxide)-l ,2-Propane(L3)and the excited triplet states were determined. It was found that L1 , L2, and L3 strongly sensitize Eu3+ luminescence, while the ligands sensitize Tb3+ luminescence very weakly. The intensity of the sensitized luminescence for Eu3+ increases in the following order: L1>>L2 >L3. It was explained by the relative energy gap between the lowest triplet energy level of the ligands (T) and 5D1 of Tb3+ or Eu3+ that the order of the luminescent intensity for Eu3+ complexes with the ligands and the ligands sensitize Tb3+ weakly. When 1000 cm-1<ΔE(T-5D1)<2000 cm-1 , the luminescent intensity of the Eu3+ complex is stronger. For Tb3+ , when AE is less than 1500cm -1 , the emitted characteristic fluorescence is very weak, especially when A£ is close to 1500 cm-1 , the emitted characteristic fluorescence is close to zero.
