Abstract

This paper presents a model of coupling a water resources evaluation (WEAP) model and a one-dimensional water quality model to simulate surface runoff at gauging stations, water supply-demand, and river water quality. To improve water qualities and serious shortage of ecological base flow in the Wei River, a water resources management model for this reach is also developed. First we apply WEAP to evaluation of demand-satisfying degree of ecological base flow under the current policies of water resources management. Then, feasible alternatives or management scenarios are worked out to upgrade the satisfying degree according to water demands by various water users and their potentials in water saving. By comparing different upgrading alternatives, a relatively optimum management scenario based on certain controls on water use is finalized. Results indicate that the ecological base flow and the water quality in the Baoji reach can be improved significantly by adopting a comprehensive approach of water-saving, pollution control and sources broadening.
