Abstract

For the investigation of purification capacity of hybrid constructed wetlands, the tidal flow-horizontal flow (TF- HF) system and horizontal flow-tidal flow (HF-TF) system were constructed on laboratorial scale. At the flood drain ratio of 12 h : 12 h in tidal wetlands, hydraulic retention time of 4 d in horizontal flow wetlands, and recirculation of 1 : 1 ,the average total organic carbon (TOC) removal rates of the two systems were 90.2% and 91.3%, but the average removal rates of NH4+ -N were 19.5% and 39.2%, respectively. The average removal rates of total nitrogen (TN) were 10.3% for TF-HF and 30.5% for HF-TF. Results indicated that the purification capacity of HF-TF system was much higher than that of the TF-HF system. The findings of this work may provide a theoretical basis for the application of combined tidal flow and horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands in practice.
