Total factor productivity study of Chinese agro-food processing industry: based on the data from 17 subdivision industries

摘要

Abstract

In order to investigate the development situation,the malmquist index measuring method was applied in this paper to estimate the total factor productivity of the agro-food processing industry and to decompose it into technical efficiency and technological progress based on the panel data of 17 subdivisions of agricultural food processing industry during 2003--2009. The result shows that, the overall change of the total factor productivity for the agricultural food processing industry was nearly little from 2003 to 2009 in China and the development of agricultural and sideline food processing industry got benefits from technology progressing. The growth of the total factor productivity for the 17 subdivisions is different due to the reason that the increase of the substantial consumption restrains the productivity rising, however, the increase of human capital investment is helpful for the improvement of productivity. It is an absolute convergence for the increase rate of the 17 subdivision industries,and the average annual rate reaches 10.7 percent.
