Abstract

To prepare arboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) by kelp residue and chloroacetice acid. [ Method J Through water wash, acid digestion, alkali and bleached to prepare raw material from kelp residue. With ethanol as solvent, after steps of alkalization, etherifieation and neutralization, CMC was obtained. The degree of substitution( DS) was measured under the conditions of different ethanol concentration, amount of alkali, alkalization time, chloroacetic acid dosage, etherifieation time and temperature. [Result] The reaction conditions were determined by some single factorial experiments. The results indicated that the optimum conditions are as follows; 12.5 g kelp residue was dispersed in 60 ml of 85% ethanol,60 ml 20% NaOH was added slowly into the solutions, the mixture was left under stirring for 60 min at 30?t. Then 17. 5 g chloroacetic acid dissolved in 20 ml ethanol was added, the mixture was allowed to react under stirring for 30 min at 40 ?, then 70 ? for 2 h. The mixture was neutralized with the dilute hydrochloric, filtered, washed with ethanol, and dried. The DS of CMC was about 0. 62 under the optimum conditions. [ Conclusion] The study could extend application field of kelp residue and properly utilize waste resource, reduce environmental pollution.
