摘要

Abstract

This article provides a historical reviewof the development of American urban planning education since the early 20th century, including its birth, growth, heydays, decline and revival. Special attention has been paid to the 1960s and 1970s as it was the turning point of American planning education..In particular, it was a period when design studio or workshop retreated from the planning education as a result of urban renewal failures, cross-disciplinary fertilization and mounting social critiques. The implications of the American experience are explored and some reflections on educating city planners in China in the future are discussed.
