Construction and characterization of a direct glucose-air alkaline fuel cell

Abstract
A glucose-based alkaline fuel cell was introduced in this paper, which did not need noble metal catalysts, enzyme or microorganism and could convert chemical energy to electric energy directly. The methyl viologen (MV) was used in this single-chamber fuel cell as electron mediator in alkaline solutions with nickel foam as anode and a cathode with a diffusion layer. A fuel cell utilizing 1 mol/L glucose in 3 mol/L KOH and 10 mmol/L MV generates the maximum power 0.59 mW/cm2 and the maximum open circuit voltage is 0.65 V, and the maximum current density is 4.16 mA/cm2. The cost of this fuel cell is inexpensive and the performance is better than enzyme fuel cells and microbial fuel cells which have been reported.
