Role of CT imaging in judging the efficacy of physiotherapy for lumbar intervertebral disc herniation in young people and the elderly

Abstract
Objective To compare the radiologic changes and the efficacy of physiotherapy by analying CT manifestations of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation in young people and the elderly before and after treatment.Methods 120 elderly patients and 30 young patients were included in this study.All the patients received comprehensive Chinese physiotherapy including lumbar traction,massage,electroacupuncture,intermediate frequency instrument for massage,and fumigation with Chinese medicine for one month.After a course of treatment,CT scans were performed again.The quantitative indexes of disc herniation were compared with the baselines after treatment.Results The clinical effectiveness rate was 80.8％ in the elderly group and 86.7 ％ in the young group.The young group was obviously superior to the elderly group in the quantitative indexes of CT imaging.Conclusions The young group is superior to the elderly group not only in the clinical efficacy but also in the quantitative indexes of CT imaging.Comprehensive physiotherapy can eliminate or alleviate symptoms of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.The quantitative indexes of CT imaging have statistical significance in the young group but not in the elderly group.关键词
