Abstract

In this paper,a pepper variety of LongJiao NO.2 was employed to investigate effects of treatments of normal water,light and severe water stress on MDA content,protective enzyme activities,chlorophyll fluorescence parameters in pepper leaves,in order to determine the soil moisture for the pepper's normal growth in the arid climate of Gansu province.Results showed that MDA content in pepper leaves under the three different treatments showed an increasing trend,activities of SOD and POD were increased firstly and then decreased.Under severe water stress,MDA content and SOD activities in leaves were higher than the other two treatments with higher early-POD activity and lower late-POD.The Fv/Fm,Fv′/Fm′,ФPSII and qP in leaves under three different treatments increased firstly and then dropped.The above mentioned indexes in leaves were lower after treated by severe water stress.The NPQ data in leaves under all the treatments were opposite to the trends of the qP data,and after treated with lighter water stress,NPQ and qP in leaves showed flat variations.These findings suggested that lighter water stress(60% of soil water content) could meet the pepper's normal growth need in arid region where water resource is deficient.
