Abstract
Objective To compare the efficacy between unilateral external fixation and compression plate fixation in the treatment of tibial fractures. Methods A total of 114 patients with tibial fractures who were treated in our hospital between March 2009 and March 2010 were included in the treatment group. They received unilateral external fixation and compression plate fixation. Another 63 patients with tibial fractures during the same period who were treated with compression plate fixation were included in the control group. The surgery duration, incision length, postoperative bone healing and complications of two groups were compared. Results The surgery duration, incision length, fracture healing time and complications of the treatment group were lower than those of the control group after a follow- up of 4 to 18 months. The difference was statistically significant between groups (P<0.05). Conclusion Unilateral external fixation has noticeable effect in treating tibia and fibula of fresh fractures. It is worthy of clinical application.
