Accumulation, Transportation, and Bioconcentration of Cadmium in Three Upland Cotton Plants under Cadmium Stress

Abstract
A pot experiment was conducted to study cadmium (Cd) accumulation and distribution, and to explore the phytoreme-dial capability of cotton for Cd in 2009 and 2010, with three cotton cultivars, ZD-90, SGK3, and TM-1 as materials. ZD-90 is a transgenic glyphosate-tolerant cotton germplasm with EPESP-G6, developed in our laboratory. SGK3 is an insect-resistant culti-var obtained from the Biotechnology Center of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. TM-1 is the upland cotton genetic standard line obtained from USDA, ARS, College Station, Texas, USA. We found that petioles had the highest accumulation of Cd, and fiber had the lowest. The ability to uptake and accumulate Cd in different plant parts of the three cultivars while under rising Cd levels can be illustrated by: fiber < seed < seed shell < root < leaf < stem < boll shell < petiole. The translocation ability, bioconcentration factor, and absorbency showed the same order in different organs and increased with Cd concentration. There were significant differences in Cd accumulation and transportation among cultivars, and these were higher in ZD-90 and SGK3 than in TM-1. We believe that cotton has great potential for absorbing and removing Cd from moderately contaminated soils and can be used for the phytoremediation of polluted soils.关键词
