Abstract

Using the solid-state synthesized CdWO4 polycrystalline as the feed material, large-size CdWO4 single crystals were grown by vertical Bridgman process. The scintillation properties of CWO single crystals were characterized systematically by UV-visible transmission spectra, photoluminescence spectra, photoluminescence decay curve, X-ray excited luminescence spectra, the relative light yield and 7-ray radiation hardness. The spectrum measurements show a high optical transmittance in the visible wavelength range and a strong emission with central wavelength at 475 nm under X-ray excitation. The photoluminescence decay time with central wavelength of 475 nm was measured to be 842 ns under the ultraviolet radiation. The relative light yield under -y-ray excitation was measured to be 51. 5% -57.4% as compared to the standard sample Csl: Tl. The single crystals were confirmed to possess a high irradiation hardness by the measured -y-ray radiation hardness of 107 rad.
