Abstract

Glass-ceramic of CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 quaternary system was successfully produced by melting method, using Baiyunebo tailing and fly ash as raw materials. The glass-ceramics process included glass melting, annealing, nucleation stage and crystallization stage, etc. The appropriate production process parameters were as follows. Glass melting temperature was 1450 ℃. Nucleation temperature was 720 ℃ and crystallization temperature was 850 ℃. The influences of basic composition ratio on the structure of the glass-ceramics have been investigated by X-ray diffraction ( XRD). The results indicated that the type of phase formation in the crystallization process depended on the kind of coordinated basic elements. The dominant crystalline phase can be formed as augite, anorthite, magnesioferrite or magnetite with the different basic composition ratio. The main crystalline phase can be changed from well crystallized augite to poor crystallized magnesioferrite and anorthite with the decrease of CaO/MgO and CaO/Al2O3 ratio. Meanwhile, it was found that the predominant crystalline phase was change from augite to magnetite when the ratio of SiO2/CaO exceeded 2. DTA results show that as the CaO increasing, the crystallization temperature of as-cast glasses are shifted to lower temperatures. However, the crystallization temperature are shift to higher temperatures with the increase of MgO, Al2O3 and SiO2. Mechanical measurements showed that bending strengths, density and chemical durability of glass-ceramics were related to the crystalline phase. The samples with augite crystalline phase have higher value of bending strengths, density and acid-resistance compared with other samples.
