Abstract

Relationship between climate and vegetation in different developmental stage of Mu Us sandy land was examined from surveying ancient literature, geoscience, paleontology, archaeological excavations and tree chronology. The results showed that the climate in Mu Us sandy land had experienced several significant dry-wet alternate since Holocene. The wet periods were around 10 kaBP, 8. 5~5. 0 kaBP, before and after 3. 5 kaBP, around 2. 5 kaBP and during the period of 1. 5~1. 0 kaBP. With the climate changes, the landscape in Mu Us Sandy land changed between: desert steppe-steppe-forest steppe. The current vegetation patterns in Mu Us sandy land was formed during the climate evolution, so the vegetation restoration and making of programs about land use in the area should take full account of local climatic factors.
