Abstract

The flashover process of ice-covered insulators is more complex than that of polluted insulators, which is due to not only the two different discharge paths, on the ice surface or inside the ice, but also such factors as ambient temperature, applied water conductivity, water film thickness and ice distribution. Therefore the effects of applied water conductivity and ice free zone on potential and electric field distributions before arc inception were studied based on a series of AC flashover experiments in the artificial climate chamber. Both experimental and calculated results indicate that insulator's flashover voltage is linearly correlated with the lerfgth of ice free zone; flashover voltage and distribution of the maximum electric field strength are influenced by the position of ice free zone; as applied water conductivity rises, flashover voltage declines, and simultaneously the distortions of potential and electric field are more serious; the high permittivity of ice, a highly conductive water film and the presence of ice free zone are key factors to change the potential and electric field distributions along a cylindrical insulator, which may give rise to the formation and propagation of arc.
