Abstract
Objective To observe the efficacy and safety of glycolic acid in female melasma. Methods Seventy-three female melasma patients were treated with glycolic acid, including chemical peeling treatment procedure and everyday treatment procedure. The former treatment lasted 3 to 5 minutes each time at an interval of 3 weeks at the concentration of 20% to 35% for 5 to 10 sessions. Photographs were taken with a digital camera pre- and post-treatments. Melasma area and severity index (MASI) score was assessed by dermatologists and the satisfaction was evaluated by patients themselves. Results After 5 sessions of chemical peeling treatment and everyday treatment.the MASI score decreased from 14,97 to 9.11 and the satisfactory rate was 70%.After 6-10 sessions treatments,the MASI score decreased to 8.77 and the satisfactory rate reached 83% .The chemical peeling procedure produced slight side effects including slight prick pain, itching and flush and no adverse effects were observed during the everyday treatment procedure. Conclusions Glycolic acid treatments were proved to be effective in the treatment of melasma with limited side-effects.关键词
