Abstract

As a comparatively mature technology to harness renewable energy, Domestic Solar Water Heater ( DSWH) has been commercialized in China. As China has vast territory and diversified nature and socio-economic conditions, the economic feasibility of DSWH needs to be examined further at the regional level. Based on the operative heat, present values of total cost and net cost are employed to compute cost per unit hot water supply and initial investment when present value of total cost equals to total benefit within 27 provincial capital cities or municipalities. Several conclusions have been drawn as follows. Firstly, the regional costs per hot water supply of DSWH vary so widely that popularization policies should suit local conditions. Secondly, compared with costs per unit wind power, solar photovoltaic power and biomass power, DSWH has significantly lower cost whose large-scale applications can help to achieve national renewable energy target cheaply. Thirdly, both discount rate and residential electricity price greatly affect consumer' s initial investment choice for DSWH. Fourthly, low income is one of the most important constraints for DSWH' s application in rural China, These findings are meaningful for design of polies to promote China's DSWH.
