Counselor verbal response modes of instant text-based online counseling

Abstract
Objective: To explore the counselor verbal response modes of instant text-based online counseling under Chinese culture and Internet environment. Methods: Ten college students clients and 10 counselors volunteers with more than 3 years counseling experience in college counseling centers participated in current research. Transcriptions of these 10 cases separately were analyzed by text-analysis method. Results: On the basis of the function of counselor verbal response and counselors' intention, there were 5 core counselor verbal response types in online counseling, namely greeting response, set-up response, relationship-building response, follow-up response, and affecting response, all of which had 24 small categories and were used to built relationship, collect information, prompt insights and changes. Mostof the online counselors used the 5 types of verbal response, but differentiations of frequencies of usage appeared in different stages of whole counseling. Specifically, in initial stage, relationship-building response was the most response; in mid stage, follow-up response became the one instead of relationship-building response; in terminal stage, affecting response increased sharply. Conclusion: It suggests that there are some different types of verbal response between face-to-face counseling and online counseling, due to the characteristic of communication in Internet The usage of verbal response in different stages could be affected by few factors, such as counseling task of different stage, counselor style, and network environment关键词
