Effects of Arginine Supplementation on Growth Performance and Free Amino Acids in Plasma of Weaned Piglets under Oxidative Stress

Abstract
The present study was conducted to test the effects of arginine (Arg) supplementation on growth performance and free amino acids in plasma of weaned piglets under oxidative stress. A total of twenty-four PIC weaned piglets were individually penned and randomly allocated into four groups with six replicates per group. Piglets were fed basal diet+injected sterile saline (control group), fed basal diet+injected diquat (Oxidative stress group), fed basal diet supplemented with 0.8% Arg+injected diquat (0.8%Arg group), and fed basal diet supplemented with 1. 6% Arg + injected diquat (1. 6% Arg group), respectively. On day 8, pigs were injected intraperitoneally either with diquat or sterile saline. Blood samples were collected before injection (Oh) and at 6, 24, 48 and 96 h post-injection for analysis. The results showed that oxidative stress significantly decreased ADG(P<0.001), ADFI(P<0.001) and increased F/G of weaned pigs (P<0.05). However, supplementation of 1.6% Arg significantly increased ADFI of weaned pigs under oxidative stress (P<0.05). Oxidative stress induced by diquat significantly decreased the concentrations of arginine, glutamic acid, lysine, methionine and threonine in plasma, increased the concentrations of isoleucine and valine in plasma. Supplementation of arginine significantly increased the concentration of lysine and valine under oxidative stress. It is concluded that arginine can alleviate the growth depression and stress response induced by oxidative stress to some degree through depress the decreasing of food intake, improving amino acid level in circulation in piglets.关键词
