A Functional Analysis of Modality System in Obama's Presidential Inaugural Address

摘要
Abstract
Modality system in Obama's presidential inaugural address is analyzed under the guidance of systemic -functional grammar. It is found that in this speech Obama was more inclined to make use of modalization, high value modal expressions and implicitly subjective modal orientation; Distributions of these modality resources are also different in each part. Those factors, such as the influence of power and solidarity, political inclination, shouldering responsibility contribute to the choice of modality in this speech and make it persuasive and inspiring. Thus, it is concluded that making use of modality appropriately helps to reach the expected goals in speech.关键词
