Clostridium butyricum: Effects on Intestinal Microflora, Morphology and Mucosal Immunity-Associated Cells in Egg-Laying Male Chicks

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to study the effects of Clostridium butyricum on intestinal microflora , morphology and mucosal immunity-associated cells in egg-laying male chicks. Two hundred and forty one-day-old Hy-Line egg-laying male chicks were randomly divided into 6 groups with 4 replicates in each group and 10 chicks in each replicate. The diets were supplemented with 0 (control group) , 150 mg/kg aureomycin (antibiotic group) , 250 (EG250) , 500 (EG500) , 750 (EG750) and 1 000 (EG1000) mg/kg Clostridium butyricum, respectively. The results showed as follows; 1) the number of E. coli in EG750 and EG1000 was significantly less than that of control group and antibiotic group (P < 0.05) , and except for EG250, the number of Lactobacillus in the other Clostridium butyricum groups was larger than that of control group and antibiotic group (P < 0. 05). 2) The villus height of small intestine of EG1000 was significantly higher than that of control group and antibiotic group, villus length/crypt depth (V/C) was significantly higher than that of control group, and mucosa thickness of jejunum was significantly higher than that of the other groups (P < 0. 05). 3 ) The number of intraepithelial lymphocyte of jejunum and ileum of EG1000 was significantly increased compared with that of control group (P <0. 05) , but was not significantly different from that in antibiotic group (P >0. 05) , the number of goblet cell of jejunum and ileum of EG1000 was significantly higher than that of control group and antibiotic group (P < 0. 05). The number of immunoglobulin A positive (IgA+) of duodenum and jejunum of EG1000 was significantly increased compared with that of control group (P <0. 05) , and not significantly different from that of antibiotic group (P >0. 05). In conclusion, Clostridium butyricum can promote growth and maintain intestine health, and the optimum supplemental level is 1 000 mg/kg under the condition of this experiment.
