Abstract
Mullite/SiC composite ceramics were fabricated by gelcasting process using SiC and mullite powder as raw materials. The effect of mullite content on microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. With the increase of mullite content, the porosity firstly decline and then increase, mechanical properties are contrary to porosity. When the mullite content is 20% (volume fraction), the porosity reach the lowest value of 9.4%, but linear shrinkage, Young's modulus of mullite/SiC composite ceramic reach the highest values, which are 26.5% and 148.6 GPa, respectively. When mullite content reaches 30%, the flexural strength and fracture toughness are higher than others, which are 397.7 MPa and 4.17 MPa·m1/2, respectively. The right amount of mullite addition can significantly improve the mechanical properties of composite ceramics. But more mullite addition will cause a lot of defects due to the volatilization of mullite during the sintering process, and then the performance of composite ceramics decrease.关键词
