Climatology characteristics of Arctic sea ice motion

Abstract
Based on the International Arctic Buoy Programme (IABP) dataset (1979?006), the characteristics of Arctic sea ice motion is studied on annual, seasonal and monthly average. Two obvious features, the anticyclon-ic Beaufort gyre and transpolar drift, are shown, while the strength and sizes of those are different in these three time scales. There is a low-pressure system over the Arctic from June to September, which drives a cyclonic sea ice motion and weakens the transpolar drift. The center of Beaufort gyre generally retreats from Canada Basin to the coast from January to September, and then moves towards the East Siberian Sea. Although SLP has an important influence on sea ice motion, the impact of Arctic surface current cannot be ignored, especially in the Fram Strait.关键词
