Abstract

The silica sand-water two-phase suspension in stirred tanks agitated by an eccentrically lo- cated Rushton turbine were experimentally studied using the PC-6D particle concentration measuring instrument. The gross suspension features of eccentric agitation were analyzed. Measurement of the solid concentration distributions and power consumption under different impeller eccentricities were carried out and compared with those of concentric agitation, Results show that the critical suspension speed and power consumption were found to increase with increasing the eccentricity. For the smaller eccentricities, the critical suspension speed is smaller than that of concentric agitation. The power consumption of eccentric agitation is larger than the concentric agitation when the impeller rotational speed is the same, The suspension uniformity can be improved with eccentric agitation, especially when the eccentricity is 0, 2, In this case, the critical suspension speed is only about 80% of that for concentric agitation.
