Abstract

Shallow oil and gas reservoirs getting exhausted continuously, exploring oil and gas in the deep stratum formation, which is hard and of complex geological structure, is of great importance. PDC bit as tool of rock breaking is the key for improving the drilling speed. It has been found that, when drilling in Dagang Binhai coast which is very hard and high abrasive stratum formation, the bits got worn seriously and the drilling speed was quite low. In this research, based on the analysis of the characteristics of the substratum, a new design of PDC bit was put forward. Improvements were made in respects of the crown, blade, teeth size, caster angle, teeth distribution, as well as the hydraulic parameters. Application results of the new bits in Binhai Well No. 6 indicated that, the average footage of a single bit was improved by 118% , the drilling speed increased by 59% , and the bit was only slightly worn.
