Expression and significance of VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 in colorectal cancer tissue

Abstract
Objective To investigate the expression of VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 in colorectal cancer and to analyze the association between VEGF-C or VEGFR-3 expression and clinicopathological variables. Methods Using immunohistochemis-try, VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 protein expression was detected in 63 cases of colorectal cancer tissues ( experimental group ) and 20 cases of benign adenoma and normal tissues ( control group ). And lymphatic micro-vessel density ( LMVD ) was counted respectively. The relationship between VEGF-C, VEGFR-3, LMVD and the clinicopathological variables was analyzed. Results LMVD in experimental group was higher than that in the control group ( 14. 82 ±4. 41 vs. 9. 56 ± 2. 32, P < 0. 01 ). LMVD was significantly higher in patients with lymph node metastasis, , in the later TNM stage, with positive VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 expression ( P <0. 01 ). No significant difference was found between sex, age, histological types and differentiation ( P >0. 05 ). The expressions of VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 in colorectal cancer were significantly higher than those in benign adenoma and normal tissues ( 60. 32% vs. 35.00% and 71. 43% vs. 40. 00% , both P < 0. 01 ). In the experimental group, significantly higher level of VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 was observed in the metastatic lymph nodes and in the later TNM stage tissues ( P < 0. 01 ). Nevertheless, no significant difference was found between different gender, age, histological types, and differentiation. Conclusion The expressions of VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 in colorectal cancer were higher than those in benign adenoma and normal tissues and closely correlated with tumor progression and invasiveness. This can provide new targets for colorectal cancer therapy.关键词
