Abstract

To investigate the pathogenic characteristics of Yersinia enterocolitica (Y . enterocolitica) isolated from oral-pharyngeal swab (tonsils) samples in Dengfeng area , 331 strains of Y . enterocolitica were isolated from 1 346 pharyngeal swab with a detection rate of 24 .59% . These bacteria were analysed by the systematic biochemistry , serotype , and PCR detection methods . Three serotypes were identified (0 : 3 , 84 .6% ; 0 : 5 , 2 .1% ; 0 : 8 , 1 .8% ) and they belonged to three biological types (1A , 3 and 4) . Distribution of characteristics of toxicity gene were as follows : ail+ , ystA+ , ystB- , yadA+ , virF+ accounted for 80 .67% , ail+ , ystA+ , ystB- , yadA-, virF- accounted for 3 .32% , which were all 0 :3 serotype ; others accounted for 16 .01% . From these observations , it is evident that swine is the dominant animal host in this area and most Y . enterocolitica strains isolated from it are pathogenic, suggesting that monitoring, quarantine and management of swine should be strengthened in the future .
