Abstract

This paper studied effect of additives on properties of vitrified bond used in diamond abrasive tools. Three vitrified bonds were made, namely bond No. 1 by using tribasic base R2O-Al2O3-B2O3-SiO2 as basic vitrified bond, bond No. 2 by adding appropriate alkali metal oxide MgO, ZnO and fluoride CaF2 in the bond No. 1, and bond No. 3 by adding appropriate rare-earth metal oxide CeO2 in the bond No. 2. The experimental results showed that the bending strength of the bond No. 2 and No. 3, sintered at 640 ℃, reached to 87.69 MPa and 92.05 MPa respectively, or 50.7% and 53. 1% higher than that of the bond No. 1. The melting temperatures for the bond No. 2 and No. 3 were reduced to 770 ℃ and 730 ℃ respectively from 840 ℃ of the bond No. 1. The new crystalline phase, eucryptite, were found in both the bond No. 2 and No. 3 which resulted in lower thermal expansion coefficients for the two bonds. In addition, the bond No. 3 had got better wettablility for diamond at sintering temperature. The samples of diamond abrasive tools were prepared with the above mentioned bonds respectively in the same conditions and some experimental data were discussed. The bending strength and rockwell hardness of diamond abrasive tools made of No. 3 vitrified bond was significantly higher than the other vitrified bonds, respectively reached 59. 34 MPa and 60.
