Abstract

Two inter-specific hybrid families (HZ and ZH) and two inbred families (ZZ and HH) were constructed using the Peruvian scallop {Argopecten purpuratus) and the bay scallop {Argopecten irradians irradians). Their shell height, shell length, shell width and whole weight were measured on Day 60 and 127 and the major factors affecting their body weight were analyzed. The results showed obvious growth hetereosis in shell height, shell thickness and whole weight (P<0.01). Path analyses showed that shell length was the major factor affecting the whole weight for inbred families. While for the hybrid family HZ, shell length on Day 60 and shell width on Day 127 were the major factors affecting whole weight. In the hybrid family ZH, the interaction between shell length and shell width on Day 60 and the shell height on Day 127 were the major factors affecting whole body weight. Therefore, different parameters should be used in selection of the hybrid families at different stages to ensure the greatest hetereosis.
